Amici tutti, parenti nisciunu

Friends to all, related to none — the person who calls everyone friend and treats everyone equally has no real loyalties and no real family bonds. In Sicily, where blood was the supreme social bond, being 'everyone's friend' was a form of betrayal — or at minimum, a mark of superficiality.

The Story Behind It

Sicilian social life organised itself in concentric circles of obligation: at the centre, the nuclear family ('la famiglia'), then the extended family ('i parenti'), then the compare (godparent networks), then close family friends, and finally — at the very edge — the general public. A person who treated everyone equally was skipping these distinctions, which meant they respected nothing. 'Nisciunu' is Sicilian for 'nessuno' — nobody. The proverb is not an attack on sociability but on false universalism: the man who smiles at everyone and means it with nobody, who offers his hand to strangers while neglecting his own blood. It is the critique of the charmer, the politician, the salesman — people who perform friendship as currency without the backing of genuine loyalty. True friendship in Sicily was specific, rare, and carried real obligations.

Expresses the Sicilian priority of blood loyalty and genuine obligation over superficial sociability. 'Nisciunu' = nessuno. Contrasts the Italian ideal of 'amicizia' with the Sicilian concept of deep specific loyalty.
