The Sicilian farmer's relationship with the land was intimate and legible. The quality of the harvest told you everything about the soil, the rainfall, the care given to planting and tending. You could not deceive the earth or be deceived by it: if you planted well and conditions were right, the earth rewarded you; if you planted poorly or neglected the soil, the earth showed it clearly in the harvest. This material truth was generalised into a principle of reality: physical evidence does not lie the way people do. The land records what was done to it with perfect fidelity. Applied to other contexts, it meant that the evidence of one's actions in the world — the results, the effects — told the truth about what had been done, regardless of what was claimed or denied.
A proverb rooted in Sicilian agricultural experience, where the land's honest response to treatment made it a model of truthfulness. 'A terra' = la terra (the earth/land), 'nun menti' = non mente (does not lie). Used broadly as a principle of material evidence.
