A curpa non è di lu vinu ma di cu n'abbiva troppu

The fault is not the wine's but the one who drinks too much — do not blame the tool for the behaviour of the person who misuses it. Responsibility belongs to the person who chooses their actions, not to the object, substance, or circumstance that they blame for their choices.

The Story Behind It

Sicily produces some of the world's greatest wines — the volcanic Nero d'Avola, the white wines of Alcamo, the fortified Marsala, the passito of Pantelleria. Wine was central to Sicilian culture, from the communion chalice to the Saturday night family table. But misuse of wine was also a real social problem, and the proverb drew a clear line of responsibility: the wine was blameless. It did what wine does, which was be wine. The man who drank too much and became violent or ruined his family had made choices, and blaming the wine was the oldest evasion in human history. The proverb was applied beyond alcohol to any situation where someone sought an external scapegoat for their own behaviour — the knife that 'made' someone violent, the money that 'corrupted' someone, the beautiful woman who 'made' a man abandon his family.

A Sicilian proverb of personal responsibility rooted in the wine culture of the island. 'Curpa' = colpa (fault), 'vinu' = vino (wine), 'n'abbiva' = ne beve (drinks of it). Used to counter blame displacement in all its forms.
