This proverb encapsulates a deeply rooted Italian social principle: the household is a private sphere and marital disputes, however heated they appear from outside, are the exclusive concern of the two people involved. The rhyme between 'marito' and 'dito' makes the saying easy to remember and gives it a playful, almost musical quality. The image of putting a finger between two people fighting suggests physically separating combatants, a role that inevitably leads to being struck by both sides. Medieval Italian law actually recognized the concept of the inviolable domestic space, and clerics were advised not to intervene in marital quarrels except in extreme cases. The proverb is found in collections from the sixteenth century onward and reflects a pre-modern reality in which marriage was as much an economic and social alliance as a romantic one, making external interference doubly dangerous. Today it is still widely used, often humorously, to advise friends not to take sides in couples' rows.
