The concept of an immutable fate guiding human life was present in Italian culture long before Christianity, rooted in the Roman belief in the Fata — the divine powers that assigned each person's destiny at birth — and in the Greek Moirai (Fates) whose spinning, measuring, and cutting of the thread of life was beyond even the gods' power to alter. Christianity recast this as divine providence, but the popular understanding remained similar: certain things were simply meant to be, and raging against them was foolish. The proverb circulated widely in Italian popular tradition and was reinforced by the enormous variability of life in pre-modern Italy — plagues, famines, earthquakes, foreign invasions — which made fatalistic acceptance a psychologically necessary strategy. Italian literature from Dante to Pirandello repeatedly explores the tension between human will and an indifferent or inscrutable fate, and this proverb crystallises the resigned conclusion that most ordinary Italians drew from that tension. Today it is often said with a mixture of philosophical resignation and dark humour, invoked when something goes wrong in a way that seems beyond anyone's control.
