Chi tardi arriva male alloggia

Whoever arrives late gets the worst choice or the worst deal. It is a warning that punctuality and promptness are rewarded, while delay leads to disadvantage.

The Story Behind It

This proverb has roots in the medieval Italian tradition of pilgrimage and travel, when inns along major routes such as the Via Francigena filled up quickly each evening. Travelers who arrived after sunset found only the worst beds — damp straw pallets in the stables, or no room at all. The phrase crystallized into a fixed saying by at least the fifteenth century and appears in several Renaissance collections of popular wisdom. Over time it detached from the literal sense of lodging and became a general principle about the rewards of promptness in any competitive situation. Today Italians use it for everything from securing a good seat at a wedding to applying early for a university place. The English equivalent 'The early bird catches the worm' expresses the same idea from the opposite angle, focusing on the reward of the early arrival rather than the punishment of the late one.

Linked historically to medieval pilgrim inns along the Via Francigena route through Italy.
