Un amico nel bisogno è un amico davvero

A friend who stands by you in times of need is a true friend. The proverb warns that fair-weather companions are plentiful, but genuine friendship reveals itself only under pressure.

The Story Behind It

This proverb is one of the most ancient in the Italian tradition, echoing classical Latin wisdom — its roots can be traced to the Roman phrase 'amicus certus in re incerta cernitur,' recorded by Ennius and later quoted by Cicero. The idea migrated into medieval Italian popular culture through church sermons and moral literature, appearing in various forms across the peninsula from the 13th century onward. The proverb reflects a world in which material hardship was constant and the social safety net was entirely the community around you — your family, your neighbours, your guild. In such a world, discovering who truly showed up when you were sick, bankrupt, or bereaved was not a philosophical exercise but a matter of survival. Italian literature has returned to this theme repeatedly, from Boccaccio's tales of loyalty and betrayal among merchants to the working-class fiction of the 20th century. Today the proverb is most often invoked after a moment of crisis has passed, as a way of naming — with gratitude or with bitterness — who was there and who was not.

Parallel to the Latin 'amicus certus in re incerta cernitur' (Ennius, quoted by Cicero in De Amicitia).
