A1

Dov'è il Foro?

Where is the Forum?

Pronunciation

FO-ro — stress on first syllable. Short, open 'o' sounds.

When to use it

Ask for directions to the most important public space in Roman cities. The Forum was the political, commercial and religious centre. At Pompeii, it is the natural first stop.

What it means

Every Roman city had a Forum ('foro') at its centre — the Italian equivalent of a Greek agora. It typically contained the basilica (law courts), temples, market stalls and administrative buildings. At larger sites there may be multiple fora (Foro Romano, Foro di Cesare, Foro di Traiano in Rome).

Variations

Come si arriva all'anfiteatro?

How do I get to the amphitheatre?

Essential at Pompeii — the amphitheatre is at the far end.

Dov'è il tempio di Apollo?

Where is the Temple of Apollo?

Specific monument navigation — use map to identify names.

Quanto dista da qui?

How far is it from here?

Important at large sites — Pompeii is 44 hectares.

Mini Dialogue

— Scusi, dov'è il Foro? — Segua questa strada principale fino in fondo, poi giri a sinistra. Non può perderlo — è la grande piazza aperta. — È lontano? — Circa dieci minuti a piedi. — Grazie.

— Excuse me, where is the Forum? — Follow this main road to the end, then turn left. You can't miss it — it's the large open square. — Is it far? — About ten minutes on foot. — Thank you.

Cultural Note

The Via dell'Abbondanza in Pompeii is the main street linking the Forum to the amphitheatre — about 700 metres of ancient Roman street with shops, bars and houses on either side. Walking it is one of the most immersive experiences in Italian archaeology.
