Sorry for the late reply!
Stress 'ri-TAR-do'. 'Risposta' = ri-SPOS-ta.
Use this when replying to a message after a significant delay. Italian messaging culture expects relatively prompt responses during waking hours.
'Ritardo' = delay/lateness. 'Risposta' = reply/response. 'Scusa il ritardo' = sorry for the delay. This phrase works equally for messages and emails. Alternative: 'Scusa se rispondo solo adesso' (sorry for only replying now).
Ho visto il messaggio tardi.
I saw the message late.
Explaining the delay.
Ero senza telefono tutto il giorno.
I was without my phone all day.
Explaining inaccessibility.
Non ti preoccupare, capisco.
Don't worry, I understand.
Reassuring response to the apology.
Italian messaging etiquette generally expects responses within the same day during waking hours. Unlike email, WhatsApp messages are perceived as more immediate. Not responding to a WhatsApp for more than a day without explanation is considered rude. However, Italians are also understanding of 'essere fuori' (being out of range or busy).
