Cultural Note

Sleep disorders affect an estimated 12 million Italians. Italian 'centri del sonno' (sleep centres) are specialist units for complex insomnia and sleep apnoea diagnosis. CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia) is the recommended first-line treatment in Italian psychiatric guidelines but is not widely available. The AIMS ('Associazione Italiana Medicina del Sonno') promotes sleep medicine in Italy. Melatonin supplements (≤1mg) are OTC in Italian pharmacies.
