Posso incassare un assegno qui?

Can I cash a cheque here?

Pronunciation

in-cas-SA-re — four syllables; stress on the third. 'Incassare' = to cash, to collect payment.

When to use it

Use this if you have a postal cheque (assegno postale) or need to know if the post office can cash regular bank cheques. BancoPosta account holders can deposit cheques; non-customers generally cannot cash them.

What it means

'Incassare' means to cash/collect. 'Assegno' is a cheque. Italian cheques (assegni) are less common than they once were, replaced largely by bank transfers. Poste Italiane through BancoPosta can process cheques for account holders. Non-account holders must go to a bank. Some post offices no longer handle cheques at all.

Variations

Ho un assegno postale — dove lo verso?

I have a postal cheque — where do I deposit it?

'Versare' = to deposit — used specifically for putting money into an account

Quanto tempo ci vuole per accreditare un assegno?

How long does it take for a cheque to clear?

Italian cheque clearing times are 3–5 working days

L'assegno è intestato a me — ho bisogno di un documento?

The cheque is made out to me — do I need ID?

Yes — a valid ID is always required for cheque transactions

Mini Dialogue

— Posso incassare un assegno qui? — Ha un conto BancoPosta? — No. — Allora deve andare alla banca emittente dell'assegno. Noi possiamo solo accreditarlo su un conto BancoPosta. — Capisco.

— Can I cash a cheque here? — Do you have a BancoPosta account? — No. — Then you need to go to the issuing bank. We can only credit it to a BancoPosta account. — I understand.

Cultural Note

Cheques (assegni) were once central to Italian commercial life but have declined dramatically. In 2022, the Italian government eliminated government-issued cheques below €1,000 and promoted electronic alternatives. The remaining use of cheques is concentrated in commercial real estate transactions and among older Italians for large personal transactions.
