Can I speak with the pharmacist in private?
pri-VA-to — stress on second syllable. 'Farmacista' — far-ma-CHIS-ta.
Ask when you have a sensitive question about medications, sexual health, mental health, or addiction. Italian pharmacies are required to offer privacy.
'Posso parlare con' = can I speak with. 'In privato' = in private. Modern Italian pharmacies have a 'zona riservata' (private area) or counselling room. This is especially useful for sensitive topics: addiction ('dipendenza'), sexual health, addiction medications ('metadone'), mental health medications, or delicate personal situations.
È una questione delicata. Preferisco non parlarne al banco.
It is a delicate matter. I prefer not to discuss it at the counter.
Explain why you need privacy — helps the pharmacist prepare
Avete una zona riservata?
Do you have a private area?
Directly ask for the private consultation space
Ho una domanda personale sul farmaco.
I have a personal question about the medication.
Signal sensitivity without specifying — the pharmacist will understand
Italian pharmacy legislation ('Decreto Balduzzi' 2012 and subsequent regulations) requires pharmacies to have a private consultation space for sensitive counselling. Pharmacists in Italy distribute methadone to enrolled patients under the SerD (addiction services) programme. They are bound by medical confidentiality ('segreto professionale'). The pharmacist-patient relationship in Italy is considered part of the healthcare team.
