Cultural Note

Carrara marble (Tuscany) has been quarried since Roman times and used for the Pantheon, Trajan's Column, and virtually all of Michelangelo's sculptures. Michelangelo personally selected his blocks in Carrara, spending months there. He said he saw the figure inside the marble and simply removed what didn't belong.
