Menefreghismo is built from the phrase me ne frego — 'I don't give a damn about it' (literally 'I rub myself of it'). The verb fregarsene means 'to not care at all'. The phrase became notorious when Benito Mussolini adopted 'Me ne frego' as a Fascist slogan in the 1920s, borrowing it from the Arditi, elite First World War shock troops who used it as a battle cry of fearless indifference to danger. After the war, the phrase was reclaimed by ordinary language and stripped of its political charge, softening into a description of everyday disengagement. The -ismo suffix turns it into an abstract ideology: menefreghismo is the system of not caring, the ism of shrugging.

It is often criticised as a national failing — the reason civic life can be chaotic, queues are jumped, and rules are ignored — but it is also privately celebrated as a kind of freedom. There is a distinction Italians make between menefreghismo as corrosive selfishness (ignoring the common good) and as liberating self-preservation (refusing to be consumed by things beyond your control). The latter is sometimes held up as the secret of Italian longevity: don't let other people's problems become your problems.
