Where is my bed?
do-VÈ — two syllables, stress on the second. Contraction of 'dove è'.
After receiving your room assignment, ask to confirm or locate your specific bed number in the dormitory.
'Dov'è' = where is (contraction of 'dove è'). 'Il mio letto' = my bed. In a dormitory with multiple bunk beds, each bed ('letto') has a number. 'Letto a castello' = bunk bed; 'letto sopra' = top bunk; 'letto sotto' = bottom bunk.
Posso avere il letto sotto?
Can I have the bottom bunk?
Always ask if you have a preference — bottom bunks are usually preferred
Quante persone ci sono nel dormitorio?
How many people are in the dormitory?
Dormitories typically have 4, 6, 8, or 10 beds
C'è un armadietto per i bagagli?
Is there a locker for luggage?
Lockers ('armadietti') are standard at Italian hostels
Italian hostels typically assign specific beds rather than just a room — you will always know your exact bed number. Bottom bunks are more desirable and fill first. If you have a back problem or difficulty climbing, request a bottom bunk ('letto sotto') at check-in.
