Rule reminder

Hedging (attenuazione) is essential in formal Italian to soften requests, express uncertainty, or present conclusions carefully. Key hedging structures: 'sembrerebbe che' (it would seem that), 'parrebbe opportuno' (it would appear appropriate), 'si potrebbe considerare' (one could consider), 'non si esclude che' (it cannot be ruled out that), conditional tense (potrebbe, dovrebbe, sembrerebbe). Academic and legal Italian also use 'si presume che', 'risulta che', 'in linea di massima' (broadly speaking).
