Advanced Causal Clauses — Proposizioni Causali B2·Implicit Causal Constructions: Participio Passato
💡

Rule reminder

An implicit causal clause can be expressed with a PAST PARTICIPLE (participio passato assoluto) at the start of the sentence: 'Stancato dal lavoro, andò a dormire' (= Poiché era stancato dal lavoro...). This construction requires that the participle's subject is the SAME as the main clause subject. The participle agrees with that subject in gender and number. This is a hallmark of formal and literary Italian.
