Superlatives express the highest or lowest degree of a quality. Italian has two main types: the relative superlative (comparing one thing to a group) and the absolute superlative (expressing an extreme quality without comparison). Mastering both types is essential for describing people, places, and things vividly in Italian.
| Structure | Masculine Singular | Feminine Singular | Masculine Plural | Feminine Plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| il/la/i/le + più + adj + di | il più alto della classe | la più alta della classe | i più alti della classe | le più alte della classe |
| il/la/i/le + meno + adj + di | il meno caro del menu | la meno cara del menu | i meno cari del menu | le meno care del menu |
| Examples | Marco è il più intelligente del gruppo | Sofia è la più veloce della squadra | Sono i più forti del paese | Sono le più simpatiche della famiglia |
The relative superlative uses the definite article (il, la, i, le) + più (most) or meno (least) + adjective + di (of/in). The article and adjective must agree in gender and number with the noun they describe. After 'di', use the appropriate preposition contraction: della classe, del mondo, del gruppo, della città. When the superlative follows the noun directly, you keep the article: Maria è la ragazza più simpatica della classe.
| Base adjective | Drop ending | Add -issimo/a/i/e | Example sentence |
|---|---|---|---|
| bello (bello/bella/belli/belle) | -o / -a / -i / -e | -issimo / -issima / -issimi / -issime | Questo palazzo è bellissimo. |
| veloce (veloce/veloci) | -e / -i | -issimo / -issima / -issimi / -issime | La macchina è velocissima. |
| importante (importante/importanti) | -e / -i | -issimo / -issima / -issimi / -issime | È una notizia importantissima. |
| lungo (lungo/lunga/lunghi/lunghe) | -o/-a/-hi/-he | -hissimo/-hissima/-hissimi/-hissime | Il film era lunghissimo. |
| ricco (ricco/ricca/ricchi/ricche) | -o/-a/-hi/-he | -chissimo/-chissima/-chissimi/-chissime | Quella famiglia è ricchissima. |
Adjectives ending in -co or -go keep the hard sound: rico → ricchissimo, lungo → lunghissimo, antico → antichissimo. Adjectives ending in -ce drop the -e before adding -issimo: veloce → velocissimo, dolce → dolcissimo. These spelling rules preserve the original pronunciation of the adjective.
| Adjective | Regular -issimo form | Irregular superlative | English meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| buono (good) | buonissimo | ottimo | excellent / very good |
| cattivo (bad) | cattivissimo | pessimo | terrible / very bad |
| grande (large/great) | grandissimo | massimo | maximum / greatest |
| piccolo (small) | piccolissimo | minimo | minimum / smallest |
| alto (high) | altissimo | sommo | supreme / very high |
| basso (low) | bassissimo | infimo | lowest / very low |
Both the regular and irregular forms are often acceptable: 'La pizza è buonissima' and 'La pizza è ottima' both mean 'The pizza is excellent.' However, the irregular forms (ottimo, pessimo, massimo, minimo) tend to be more formal or emphatic. Ottimo and pessimo are very common in everyday speech. Massimo and minimo are frequently used in set expressions: al massimo (at most), al minimo (at least/minimally), con il massimo rispetto (with the utmost respect). Note: il migliore (the best) and il peggiore (the worst) are the irregular RELATIVE superlatives of buono and cattivo.
| Base adverb | Absolute superlative | Example |
|---|---|---|
| bene (well) | benissimo | Parla italiano benissimo. |
| male (badly) | malissimo | Ho dormito malissimo stanotte. |
| presto (early/soon) | prestissimo | Ci vediamo prestissimo! |
| tardi (late) | tardissimo | Sono arrivato tardissimo. |
| poco (little) | pochissimo | Mangia pochissimo. |
| molto (much/very) | moltissimo | Mi piace moltissimo questo vino. |
Both 'il migliore' and 'il più buono' can mean 'the best', but there is a nuance: 'il migliore' is more common in formal and written Italian and often refers to quality in a broader sense (the best student, the best solution), while 'il più buono' tends to refer to taste or personal goodness (the tastiest food, the kindest person). In everyday speech, both are widely accepted and often interchangeable.
