Italian Words You Already Know (From Pizza Menus)

6 min read ยท Vocabulary

Here's a secret nobody tells you: if you've ever ordered a Margherita, asked for an espresso, or debated penne vs rigatoni โ€” you've already been speaking Italian. You just didn't know it yet. The English language has absorbed hundreds of Italian food words so naturally that most people don't realise they're borrowings at all. Let's build on what you already have โ€” and add the context that makes these words come alive.

Italian food vocabulary isn't just useful for restaurants. It opens up the entire culture. Food in Italy is geography, history, identity, and argument. 'Pesto' comes from Liguria. 'Ossobuco' is Milanese. 'Arancini' are Sicilian. When you know the language of Italian food, you understand something much deeper about how Italians think about where they come from.

๐Ÿ• Pizza vocabulary

la pizzaโ€”pizza (yes, really)

Vorrei una pizza, per favore. โ€” I'd like a pizza, please.

la margheritaโ€”Margherita pizza

Named after Queen Margherita of Savoy in 1889. Tricolore: red tomato, white mozzarella, green basil.

la mozzarellaโ€”mozzarella cheese

Questa mozzarella รจ freschissima! โ€” This mozzarella is super fresh!

il basilicoโ€”basil

Con il basilico fresco, per favore. โ€” With fresh basil, please.

The Neapolitan pizza rules ๐Ÿฆˆ

In Naples, la pizza vera (real pizza) has strict rules: thin base, soft in the middle (non croccante at the centre), San Marzano tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, cooked at 485ยฐC for 90 seconds in a wood-fired oven. Neapolitans take these rules extremely seriously. The Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana has been certifying pizza-makers since 1984. If you call a Neapolitan's pizza 'just food', prepare for a very long conversation.

il cappuccinoโ€”cappuccino

Il cappuccino si beve solo al mattino. โ€” Cappuccino is only drunk in the morning. (Italian rule!)

il macchiatoโ€”espresso with a splash of milk

Un macchiato caldo, grazie. โ€” A hot macchiato, thanks.

gli spaghettiโ€”spaghetti (plural!)

Gli spaghetti alla carbonara sono romani. โ€” Carbonara spaghetti are Roman.

Super Squalo's tip ๐Ÿฆˆ

In Italy, food is religion. Saying 'questa pasta รจ buonissima!' to an Italian host will make you their best friend for life. Try it. But also learn the food rules: cappuccino only in the morning, never put cheese on fish pasta, 'peperoncino' is the chilli pepper (not the same as 'peperone' which is a bell pepper). These distinctions matter enormously to Italians.
