Italians simply call this 'un caffè' — not an espresso. If you walk into an Italian bar and ask for 'un espresso', you will not be wrong, but you will sound slightly foreign.

The Rules of the Italian Bar

Never order a cappuccino after 11am — Italians believe milk coffee is only for the morning and will look at you with polite horror if you ask for one after lunch. Always pay at the cassa (cash desk) first in busier bars, then hand the receipt to the barista. Drinking standing at the bancone is cheaper than sitting at a table. And one more golden rule: in Naples, if someone behind you says 'Un caffè sospeso' — they are prepaying for a coffee for a stranger in need. It is one of the most beautiful traditions in Italian culture, dating back at least to the 19th century. These pauses structure the Italian working day far more than formal meetings do.
